Sapelo Island WMA Hunting/Camping Trip

For the last two years, my dad and I have been going to Sapelo Island which is one of the barrier islands off the coast of Georgia.  The island houses the RJ Reynolds Mansion (ironically I used to merchandise the RJ Reynolds brand) and University of Georgia Marine Institute.  The island is not very big and most of it is WMA land run by the state of Georgia.

Every year the state does a quota hunt to help control the deer population on the island, and for the last two years and ongoing, my dad and I will plan to attend.  Now, I’m not much of a hunter, I will admit, but I do enjoy it.  I used to gun hunt with my dad several years ago but as I grew up, other things took precedent in my life and I slowly just just fell out of it.  But two years ago, my dad introduced me to bow hunting and I’ve been hooked ever since.  It is so much harder to hunt with a bow than a rifle but the challenge makes it so addictive.

So last year, we went on the Sapelo Island hunt and in order to get there you have to either bring your own boat that you can dock right next to the camp site, or take the ferry and get a local resident (there are only like 100 people on the island) to drive you to the camp site.  The first year, we took the ferry and hired a local to drive us to the camp.  This year, though, my dad actually bought a nice Mako center console boat.  So instead of taking the ferry we dropped the boat off at a local boat ramp and carried our stuff to the island.  The cool part about all that is that you can take more gear since the camp is right by the dock.

As far as the hunting goes, you wait in line to choose a spot that the rangers have marked off and there are some spots that are better than others so it’s good to get in line early.  We usually setup chairs around 3 a.m. to make sure we are there first.. :)   After you get your spots chosen, the rangers take everyone out in trailers and drop you off on Wednesday to scout your area and setup your stands.  Then Thursday, Friday and Saturday, they take you out once in the morning around 4:30 (it usually takes an hour to get the last one dropped off) then pick you up just before lunch.  Then they take a group out again after lunch and pick you up at sundown.

OK.. so I won’t bore you with more details.  Here are some pictures from the first two years that we have been on this hunt.

This was our first trip on the ferry with all of our stuff.  Thank God we don’t have to do that again.

My dad.

This was us in the morning waiting to pick a location.  We’d been there since 3:30 in the morning.

It was pretty cold.  Decked out in like 5 layers… lol

This is one of the trailers that they used to take out the hunters.  I learned quick that I didn’t want to be on that trailer.  You feel every bump and as you can see.. there is so padding on those seats.

And this is where I was for the first trip.  We setup my stand right on this deserted road and from that stand I saw 28 deer… I’m too embarrassed to tell how many of them I missed.. lol..  needless to say this was my first year bow hunting.

This was the sunset that we saw from our camp.  I cannot tell you how awesome it was to experience a sunset like this every night.  Truly an awesome experience.

These are shots from this year’s trip.  Our boat is on the far side.  It was so nice to bring our stuff so close to the camp.

The deck going back to the camp from the dock.

We would also use a cast net (not this one) and catch shrimp off the dock.. then use the shrimp to go fishing.  It was so much fun.

And finally just a couple shots of the camps around us and a few of our own camp.

And this is our camp…. we combined with some guys we met last year and setup a huge community area.

Our tent is the blue one in the back.

Already can’t wait for next year’s trip!

seniorSession: Britney WrightImetSohere

So here is a continuation of my session with Britney.  She was joined by her parents and her sister as we journeyed to several different locations.  Starting at Tree Tops off of River Rd, we shot a few pictures to start the day.  Later on we drove downtown to a couple spots and ended up by the old Holiday House off of Broadway.  I usually don’t have an assistant to help me out so I used Britney’s mom and dad as assistants and had them holding reflectors and wireless flashes.  They were a TON of help.. :)

So here is a bunch of images that I was able to capture for Britney’s seniorSession.

lifestyleSession: Bishop Family

Robbie and Stacy wanted some family pictures with there son, Mason, so we decided to meetup around Flatrock Park to capture a couple of images.  Of course Mason had more fun exploring the area than actually taking pictures so every moment that we could get him for a picture, we jumped at the opportunity.

Here are a few images from that session.
